DIY Shiplap Walls

July 29, 2016August 24, 2016 thehandiworkhome3 Comments

When we remodeled The Hall Bath I knew I wanted shiplap walls. I however had no hope of tearing off my drywall to find ‘real’ shiplap underneath. So I opted for a DIY version that was easy, sturdy and budget friendly. We are adding more shiplap in the house to bring that same farmhouse feel to… Continue reading DIY Shiplap Walls

Life Happens

Part of the fun of doing a home renovation all on your own is the ability to control your environment, and your budget in your makeover. The downfall is that this usually is a ‘side job’ to all the other things life has going on. It’s too easy to keep your nose down and working… Continue reading Life Happens

Kitchen Remodel ~ Demo Day

June 8, 2016 thehandiworkhome2 Comments

Matt asked me what I wanted for Mother’s Day and do you know what I said?…I want a demo day…and not just any demo day, kitchen demo day! Of course that meant I wanted all the stuff that came after too, but we don’t need to get caught up on the details of that just… Continue reading Kitchen Remodel ~ Demo Day

The Hall Bath

June 7, 2016September 26, 2016 thehandiworkhome10 Comments

When we bought our house we sat down and made sketches and plans for all the changes we wanted to make. I had in my mind about 90% of it and put it to paper. Mostly because my visual husband needs to see a picture…apparently talking with my hands doesn’t cut it. Of course with… Continue reading The Hall Bath

Unexpected Lessons from Trailer Living

June 1, 2016 thehandiworkhomeLeave a comment

In my previous post I wrote about our new home purchase in the country. What I skimmed over in that story was the seven months it took us to find a house. Those seven months were their own story that I wanted to have some time to really chat about. You know I love to… Continue reading Unexpected Lessons from Trailer Living

Buying the Potential

May 23, 2016May 23, 2016 thehandiworkhomeLeave a comment

Early in our relationship as Matt and I dreamed about our future, we knew we always wanted to live on property and have space to do things we wanted, build things, explore, let our kids roam. When we bought our first home in a residential building track we were so excited. Not because this was… Continue reading Buying the Potential

The First One

May 20, 2016 thehandiworkhome2 Comments

Here it is…the first post. Just in case my grandma isn’t the only one reading this, I will introduce myself. Hi! I’m Rachael. I love Jesus, I am flawed and a little broken, but am thankfully redeemed. I mess up and I don’t mop my floors nearly as much as my mother would like…or… Continue reading The First One

So excited to have my hands on this new book by @readaloudrevival. It's perfect timing as spring is always when I get my planning bug for the following school year. #teachingfromrest is a favorite read I go over every summer. I'm looking forward to more inspired wisdom!! What are you reading??
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty....I am the living one. I died, but look--I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave." Revelation 1:8&18. Hallelujah HE has conquered the grave. Happy Easter!!! 🎉💕
Life. It just keeps marching on. A few weekends ago we were in Monterey Bay visiting the aquarium and the beach for our annual homeschool day. While we were there we got word that our Oma had been hospitalized and wasn't doing well. When we got home we went to see her and say our goodbyes. She passed minutes before we arrived. While that made us sad, we knew we had had so much time with her. We had said all the things we wanted to while she was living. That is the biggest and most beautiful thing that I will take away from knowing her. She never minced words or wasted them. She said what she felt, what she thought. She was a survivor of a world War that took place in her home country and all around her as she fled from one place to another. She understood how quickly we can be gone like I never will. We buried her on the first day of spring. It was perfectly fitting to say our last goodbyes on a day of renewal, of beauty and cleansing rain. All the while we're planning the graduation of our oldest, in the middle of home remodeling and all the usual business. It's funny how death punctuates life and reminds us not to get caught up in the day to day. Even though life goes on and we all have things to do, I want to move forward changed, enjoying all the moments with all the people I love. 💕
I have been sick for over a week and what started as a small sinus cold turned into a bigger mess because I don't let myself rest. 😣There's always something to be done and the moment I feel a little better I think, "oh I will do that laundry or load the dishwasher". I put off school with my younger two because I am too hoarse to read out loud. Today though they brought their math to the couch and snuggled up next to me. This is real life homeschooling. It's not always glamorous (like my bedroom decor piled next to the couch because we painted our bedroom then I got sick) or ideal. Sometimes it's days of just getting in some math, reading and writing of any kind. I find the hardest person to extend grace to is myself, but I'm learning how necessary it is. Here's to health and mama's who can rest in grace. Happy Wednesday! 💕
